Driving in Italy without undergoing an examination?

Have you ever considered exploring Italy’s beautiful places with your own car once you move and live here? Imagine driving on the bustling roads of your city, doing daily activities like grocery shopping, taking your child/children to school, or going to work.

However, you might not have a driver’s license, or perhaps you do, but can’t use it here. Are you one of those foreigners struggling to study driving lessons at a driving school to obtain an Italian driver’s license? It can be quite frustrating, right?

Today, I have good news for you! In this blog, I’ll share something that might help you with your problem. Did you know you can obtain an Italian driver’s license without taking a driving exam? Yes, you read it right! According to the Ministero delle Infrastrutture e dei Trasporti, a foreign driver’s license can be exchanged for an Italian one if your country is an EU member or has an agreement with the Italian government. This process is called “Conversione patente non comunitaria.

Here are some countries with agreements with the Italian government:

Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, El Salvador, Philippines, Japan, Israel, Lebanon, Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Principality of Monaco, Great Britain and Northern Ireland (applicable to Gibraltar, Bailiwick of Guernsey, Isle of Man, Bailiwick of Jersey), Republic of Korea, Republic of San Marino, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay.

Here’s a list of requirements you need to prepare to request the conversion:

– TT2112 form

– Receipt of payment from PagoPA

– Marca di bollo €32 for Non-EU countries

– Driving license (original)

– Photocopy of driving license

– Photocopy of the receipt from the psychophysical suitability examination issued by a qualified doctor, dated no earlier than 3 months.

– Sworn translation of the foreign driver’s license.

Before converting your foreign driver’s license, remember that you must have obtained the license before acquiring residence in Italy. The conversion must be requested within a specific period from obtaining residence in Italy, which varies based on the country that issued the license and the specific conversion agreement with Italy.

The maximum residency period in Italy is 4 to 6 years, depending on the country’s agreement with the Italian government.

But what if you’ve been living in Italy for about 4 or 6 years now, or you don’t even have a driver’s license and come across this information? Is it still possible to drive in Italy?

My answer is… yes, it’s still possible! How? Please wait for my next blog or watch the video below.
